Why I registered independent American troops were senselessly slaughtering and being slaughtered in southeast asia. When I was old enough to register to vote, I had my hopes up that Eugene McCarthy, the peace candidate, would win the 1968 Democratic Party primary. I never would have registered Republican: I'm the black sheep in a Republican family. Growing up in San Diego County, I was dumbfounded that "cold" was normal behavior in that Republican southern California. Congressman Pete McCloskey was the only Republican in Washington to be against the satanic bloodshed in southeast asia. But we saw Chicago's Mayor Richard Daley sic the police on the Yippies during the Democratic Convention. We saw protestors being clubbed mercilessly in the streets. So, I said "hasta la vista" to both major parties, registered 3rd party, and never looked back.
It was a logical evolution through the decades: us more astute ones moved into the Peace and Freedom Party, then us more astute ones moved into the Citizen Party, then us more astute ones moved into the Green Party.
When I met Marcella, who is now my wife, she had registered to vote as an independent. After 8 years, I have to conceed that she's right. There's too little integrity with ANY political party. It's dumbfounding how intensely the Dems & Reps are against ANY political or campaign reform. The mean-spirited harrassment I've received by people who claim that they're Greens, here in New Mexico, is chilling. |

Disarm the undemocratic bastards.
As contrary as it may first appear: if America is some day to have a legitimate multi-party system, it may be by having candidates run as independents rather than promoting third parties.
If you plan on running as an independent candidate and you want some useful advice, contact me.
When registering to vote: those who do NOT declare to be a member of any particular political party should have the same opportunity to work and get paid as an election poll precinct worker as do those who claim a particular party membership. Currently, non-party voters are being discriminated against.
