from Wikipedia: In the United States, the term ''progressive'' can be traced back to the Progressive Era of the early 20th Century, when certain politicians (see Theodore Roosevelt, Bull-Moose Republicans, and the United States Progressive Party) and civilians pushed for better working conditions for the average worker, better living conditions for the poor, the cleaning up of corruption in politics, environmental conservation and other issues.

The "progressives" of Teddy Roosevelt's day were much more liberal than most Democrats are today. The "socialism" (note the lower case "s") of Teddy's cousin, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (Conservation Corps, Tennessee Valley Authority, Rural Electric, etal), would be more indicative of the intended use of the word "progressive", today. Those flaunting the use of the word "progressive" at the start of the 21st century, are members of the Green Party and the more socialistic Democrats. Today, "socialist" and "progressive" are used interchangeably. The "socialism" implied here is the democratic socialism of the Scandinavian countries (as found in the dictionary definition of the word "socialism", not the distorted definition used by the Conservatives of Britain or the Republicans of the U.S.) - not that of totalitarian regimes. Both the original "socialists" and the current-day "progressives" want bottom-up government above all things. Not top-down.

The Four Original Goals of Progressivism:
1. Protecting social welfare - YMCA
2. Promoting moral improvement - prohibition of alcohol
3. creating economic reform - change of individual behavior
4. fostering efficiency - "Taylorism"

Modern day issues for "progressives" are: ecology, pollution control, unicameral legislature, publicly-funded healthcare, cessation of the death penalty, affordable housing, proportional representation, instant runoff voting, fusion candidates, a vital Social Security System, alternative (sustainable) energy sources, and smart growth of urban development.

Why Progressive Society?

During their speeches in Albuquerque, Jim Hightower and Ralph Nader repeatedly used the word "progressive".

One of America's best muckraking magazines is named "The Progressive".

The 35 years that I've been involved in third party politics, the term "progressive" has always been a noble one.

Current laws at the local, state, and national level prevent any meaningful third-party results.

So, rather than becoming a political party, I recommend that PROGRESSIVE SOCIETY be a civic activist club for non-voters, independents and members of the Green Party, Labor Party, Socialist Party, New Party, and the more enlightened Democrats.

We should be listening to Prof. Juan Cole, not Shrub, Jr, about what the U.S. should do about the war in Iraq.

Progressive Society Manifesto

Economic Development as if People Mattered

Copyright 2000-6 by Andrew Homer

The progressive agenda is the only political and economic agenda that brushes up against spiritual values.

Considering mental health: 1 - You can't respect others if you don't respect yourself. 2 - You can't love others if you don't love yourself.

Sharing is a desire which springs forth from a SENSE of abundance. That's how the socialist (spelled with a small "s") mindset shows up.

People who feel deprived - people who sense lack - are the classic greedy, self-serving Republicans who, rather than want to share, want to manipulate and control, because of the chronic fear that the world is a dangerous place.

As an American revolutionary said, "Either we hang together or assuredly, we'll hang separately."

The paranoids who subscribe to the capitalist religion have their siege mindset and circle their wagons. They have their country club, yacht club, Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, the Business Roundtable, the Trilateral Commission, the Bilderberger Group, the Davos Conference, their industry association, and their corporate board.

What does the hard working shmuck have? They have their churches, synagogues, saloons, neighborhood watch, public education, conservation groups, VFW halls, the AARP, Social Security, the VA Hospital, a military career, civil service, neighborhood associations, Public Citizen, the Gray Panthers, Common Cause, limp labor unions, and police review boards.

Gee, I wonder which group has the real financial and political clout in the western world?

Progressive economic development requires a spiritual mindset of abundance and a caring for others. It's a mindset that says, "How can I enjoy the good things in life when I see others suffer?"

The capitalist asks, "How can us 1% of the population exploit the others?"

The progressive considers labor more precious than the shareholders and asks the question, "How can we formulate a society free of unnecessary deprivation; a society of caring and sharing; a society where the ambitious can earn what they want but not at someone else's disadvantage?"

One of the ways our economy is manipulated by the capitalists is to seize the political process and orchestrate sham senarios duping the voters into believing that they have some say, some clout in selecting office holders.

In America, only 55% of the adults are registered to vote. On the best of election days, at most, 20% of the registered voters bother to cast their vote. So, out of the 11% of American adults who attempt to select office holders, only 6%, at best, choose the winning candidates.

Is that representational government?

Both the political process and economic policy decision making needs to become more inclusive.

But as long as the capitalists love this bogus two-party system, as long as the corporatists continue to sabotage legislation that would allow viable third party impact, things wont change. The 1% will stay in control.

We need both political reform and economic reform. But we can't have one without the other. The financial mavens are in bed with the political gurus. And they don't like being interrupted. They don't appreciate us progressive gadflys pointing out that the emperor isn't wearing clothes. They don't want their scam to be exposed.

Their dog-and-pony show only works as long as they own and control the media - as long as the hard working shmucks are wasting their time drinking beer and watching TV.

We'll take the moral high road and follow the role models of Jesus and Gandhi - we'll lead by example.

To priortize priorities

Progressives are for economic development, but NOT to the detriment of quality of life, nor violation of civil rights, nor endangering public health, nor having political/economic power being consolidated to a few, nor having self-determination be diminished. Decentralization is often considered prudent.

Why have Democrats joined the Republicans in hurting labor, thus hurting the American family?

"Comrades, what we need is the broad middle of the road approach of Sweden and Scandinavia and democratic socialism which has worked well no matter which party or parties controlled the governments there, and it's the middle way between Moscow old style communism and pure market capitalism. Thus we need to be ataking that broad middle way path of Olaf Palme and the real Social Democrats of the rest of Europe such as Willy Brandt and old Harold Wilson. This would also go along with the democratic socialism of Gough Whitlam of Australia, whose government the CIA carried out a coup against as documented in the "The Crimes of Patriots: A True Tale of Dope, Dirty Money, and the CIA" by Jonathan Kwitney, when Whitlam." - Andrew D Hood

HALLELUEA!!!

Best music to a progressive's ears in 30 years: The 2 best news reports since the end of the Vietnam War!!! Both within the same week (2005 June 05-12)!!

1 - The G8 cancelled the debts of the 18 most poor nations. In the next 12 months, 20 more countries may yet qualify for this Jubilee to have their debts cancelled by the World Bank & the International Monetary Fund.

2 - The fact that the right are now TALKING with the left about "universal healthcare" (publicly-funded healthcare) is a MAJOR sea change!! It's, now, an issue that even Newt Gingrich can agree w/ future President Hillary.

If one turns their back toward efforts to develop employee-owned cooperatives, then one doesn't care about the concept of democracy. If one turns their back toward efforts to develop third parties, then one doesn't care about the concept of representational government.

Guns in School

In America, 100,000 students take a gun to school everyday. 200,000 students stay home everyday, because they fear of being shot. 13 students are killed everyday in school.

Gambling

For those of you who think that either the lottery or casino gambling is a good idea: Legalized gambling costs America $5 billion a year in social costs. - 10-26-99, CBS News

The Green-Democratic Alliance have an interesting idea

"Promote the Two Tier Approach: Democrats helping Greens build long term political presence by helping them win local, regional, and 'nonpartisan' seats in city councils, county commissions, state government, and boards and such (which fits into the Green political philosophy of building from the bottom up) in return for Greens agreeing not to run spoilers against good Democratic candidates in larger national and state races."
