Parking her car at the first trailhead she saw, she set off on the Four-Mile Trail. Carrying nothing but a water bottle, she intended to hike only a short distance but was so wowed by the scenery that she kept on walking. Two hours later she found herself at Glacier Point, considered by many to be the grandest viewpoint in the West. Scanning the scene, she noticed tourists dressed in everything from high heels to a nun's habit, and realized that she could have driven to Glacier Point instead of walking. Ann Marie vowed she'd never again go hiking without a map.

More than two decades later, Ann Marie has gained substantially more outdoor savvy and is a dedicated California outdoorswoman. Like many first-time visitors, she was immediately inspired by the Valley's sheer granite walls and shimmering waterfalls. Like many first-time visitors, she was immediately inspired by the Valley's sheer granite walls and shimmering waterfalls.

Felicia Kempwas raised camping and hiking across the U.S. with her family and discovered backpacking for the first time at Philmont Scout Ranch at the age of 13. She's hiked everywhere her travels take her, from the depths of the Grand Canyon with her younger brother to the turquoise waters of Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia with her husband. When she and her husband moved to Northern California they immediately started exploring, fell in love with the diversity of landscapes, started a family, and began sharing their hiking adventures publicly online in 2015. When her middle child was diagnosed with Tay-Sachs disease, getting on trails as a family became more of a challenge. Aside from the typical balance of full-time jobs not in the outdoors industry and a family of five, she and her husband worked to find ADA-compliant paths to continue sharing the joys of nature with their children.

Felicia's goal is to give confidence to would-be and newer hikers to break through barriers and get outside. She advocates for diversity initiatives through both her legal career and in the outdoors, and helps to educate others on the principles of Leave No Trace. She hopes that when people see her plus-sized, tall and brown body hiking solo, or wrangling the family on the trail, it inspires others to feel comfortable taking up that same space. She's written several outdoors-related articles and enjoys creating social media content as Family Trail Time. She is the founder of Take A Hike Tay-Sachs in support of Cure Tay-Sachs Foundation and founded the group Sacramento Women Hikers.

Number of Pages: 680

Dimensions: 0.94 x 8.35 x 5.35 IN

Publication Date: April 02, 2024

Report copyright infringement

by Kelsey Perrett (Author), Miles Howard (Author), Moon Travel Guides (Author)

Hit the trail and experience the best local adventures in Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut with Moon New England Hiking! Inside you'll find:

150 Outdoor Getaways including easy day hikes and multi-day backpacking trips

Diverse Hiking Options from breathtaking seaside walks in Coastal Maine to challenging backcountry treks in the Berkshires

Find Your Hike: Choose from strategic lists like the best spots for a swim, high-elevation vistas, New England oddities, and hikes with nearby breweries, plus a breakdown of the best hikes for each season

The Top Outdoor Experiences: Cool off under a cascading waterfall, pick wild blueberries from a meadow, and take in views of endless fall foliage. As a young hiker and later, a live-in caretaker and staff manager for the Appalachian Mountain Club's wilderness hut system, he honed his love for the great outdoors. Any given day on the job as a professional mountain man could have involved dispensing trail advice, cooking a five-course meal for 60 people, or immobilizing a broken leg. In his spare time, he would toss a few Snickers bars in a bag and explore the landscape by foot.

He eventually traded his hiking boots for hi-tops and moved to Boston, where he wrote for the Boston Phoenix and eventually launched a freelance career. Along the way, he also researched and wrote his first book: a study of Millennial-aged adults in America, their political beliefs, and their thoughts on the 2016 US election.

Miles still lives in Boston today, but takes every chance he gets to return to the New England wilderness he calls home.

Kelsey Perrett grew up in north central Massachusetts, in the shadows of Mount Wachusett and Mount Watatic. Weekend-worthy wilderness hikes await explorers in: the 100,000-acre Cabinet Mountains Wilderness, where alpine lakes hide among amid sheer shelves of rock; the Scotchman Peaks, which house millennia-old trees beneath their rugged, brushy summits; the shallow, grass-fringed pools of Ten Lakes Scenic Area, just shy of the Canadian border in northwest Montana; and the jeweled basins of the Seeley-Swan Valley.

**Mountaineers Books designates 1 percent of the sales of select guidebooks in our Day Hiking series toward volunteer trail maintenance and conservation.

For this book, our 1 percent of sales is going to Montana Wilderness Association.

Number of Pages: 320

Dimensions: 0.8 x 7 x 5.1 IN

Illustrated: Yes

Publication Date: May 14, 2018

Report copyright infringement

by Tami Asars (Author)

Written by the author of the popular Hiking the Wonderland Trail

Features all-new text and photos

More than 20 new hikes and all existing hikes refreshed

1 percent of sales benefit Washington Trails Association

With old-growth evergreens, wildflower meadows, enchanting wildlife, raging rivers, and sparkling lakes set against a backdrop of ice flows, gaping crevasses, and crumbling sheer rock walls, the Mount Rainier National Park is a special sanctuary for locals and visitors alike.
